Few books are as appalling or eerily visionary, maybe the >The Painted Bird by Jerzy Kozinski, and fewer are as naturally stylized, maybe the best of Hemingway. This was my first taste of Cormac McCarthy's prose, and from what I've heard it's probably the best place to start.
